What is somatic therapy?
As a somatic therapist, I often explain that healing doesn’t happen only through talking, it happens through the body. Somatic Therapy is a body-centered approach to mental health that focuses on the connection between the mind, nervous system, and physical sensations to support emotional healing and trauma recovery.
What Is Somatic Therapy?
Somatic therapy is based on the understanding that stress, trauma, and unresolved emotions are stored in the body. Even when the mind wants to move on, the nervous system may stay in a state of fight, flight, or freeze. In somatic therapy, we gently work with body awareness such as breath, posture, movement, and physical sensations to help the nervous system return to balance.
How Somatic Therapy Works
In sessions, I guide clients to notice what’s happening in their bodies in the present moment. This might include muscle tension, temperature changes, tightness, or subtle impulses to move. By slowing down and listening to these signals, clients can safely release stored stress without becoming overwhelmed. This approach is especially effective for trauma, anxiety, chronic stress, and emotional regulation.
Benefits of Somatic Therapy
Somatic therapy helps clients feel more grounded, calm, and connected to themselves. Many people report reduced anxiety, improved emotional resilience, better sleep, and a deeper sense of safety in their bodies. Because it works bottom-up, starting with the nervous system, it can be effective even when traditional talk therapy hasn’t fully helped.
A Holistic Path to Healing
As a somatic therapist, my role is to create a safe space where the body’s wisdom leads the healing process. Somatic therapy is not about reliving trauma, but about learning how to feel safe, present, and empowered in your body again. When the body feels supported, lasting emotional change becomes possible.
